America's possible Osage Indian heritage -
(I have not researched this enough to say that I believe it, but it is food for thought.)

According to Donna Flood, she might have gone back to live with the Indians in Oklahoma after her husband died.  She believes her to have died in Oklahoma, possibly in or near Ralston, Oklahoma. The census says she died somewhere in Oklahoma.  In her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Brewer Collin's old Bible it says that she lived at one time around Bolivar, Missouri.  Quote from Donna's email: "There was an Osage encampment across the river [in Missouri] from that town, and I felt she was Osage.  Because when her granddaughter and her husband ran from the dust bowl they settled on an area at Ralston in between two Osage allotments.  My grandfather owned that, and in those days you could not buy Osage land unless you were Osage.  There is a picture of my grandmother, Amerika's granddaughter with an Osage woman (Hun kah mohn Kah, Sas a Chief) that I have and the Osages asked me for it to put in their museum." Source - Email from Donna Flood to my sister, Peggy

Donna also lists and pictures a hymnal that was given to one of America’s daughters from America. Complete with handwriting!
Source - Note from my sister, Peggy

"Research is not validated on America but it looks to be she has some relationship to He-kah-Mon-Kah, Osage woman, wife of Sam Smith... Since John Wesley Brewer's father's name was Jacob Fletcher Brewer, the Fletcher name may be the tie to the Osage since there are those of the Osage who are Fletcher's and they were the descendants of Fletcher's whose pictures were saved in Nancy Bellzona's Pictures.  This is where the skills of survival as to the native culture could have been learned, the hunting, the drying of food, the weaving of baskets and many many other survival skills."

Jacob was in the Union army with the Sappers and Minors, who would do road construction, dig trenches/tunnels toward the enemy (very dangerous)

Jacob also married MARANDA CLARK, daughter of WILLIAM CLARK and RACHEL STARKEY, on 15 Dec 1855 in Polk County, Missouri. Maranda was born on 16 Aug 1834 in Ohio. She died on 3 Nov 1903 in Monona County, Iowa. She was buried in Belvidere Cemetery, Monona County, Iowa. Her ancestors were from North Carolina.

194 F vii. ANNIE MARGRETT BREWER was born about 1830 in Dry Point Twp, near Cowden, Shelby County, Illinois. She died after 1850 in Shelby County, Illinois (last known residence).

195 F i. NANCY? BREWER (NATHAN R, ISAAC, HOWELL JR, HOWELL SR, GEORGE) was born in 1820/1825, possibly in McMinn County, Tennessee.

Nancy married THOMAS SIMONS 17 Aug 1841 in Scott County, Missouri.

The 1830 Census of McMinn County showed that Nathan had a daughter who was 5-10 years old (born between 1820 and 1825), which is where I got my estimates from.  I don't know if this Nancy is actually a daughter of Nathan, but she could be.

There was also a Nancy Brewer who married Thomas Simons 17 Aug 1841 in Scott County, Missouri, which is where Nathan ended up.  This is why I have suggested that this daughter shown in the 1830 census was named Nancy.

Eli Brewer (her brother?) had a daughter named Nancy J (coincidence?). This might be an indication that Nancy is in fact the name of one of Eli's sisters.

196 F ii. CIVILITY? BREWER (NATHAN R, ISAAC, HOWELL JR, HOWELL SR, GEORGE) was born in 1820/1825 in of McMinn County, Tennessee.

Civility married ELIAS HARRIS 24 Mar 1842 in Scott County, Missouri.
Nathan's family in the 1830 McMinn County, Tennessee census showed another daughter aged 5-10 (born between 1820-1825).  This is why I have included this birth date and place estimate.

There was a Civility Brewer who married Elias Harris 24 Mar 1842 in Scott County, Missouri. Nathan ended up in Scott County, so it is possible that Civility was his daughter, though certainly not proven.

197 F iii. LUCINDA? BREWER (NATHAN R, ISAAC, HOWELL JR, HOWELL SR, GEORGE) was born in 1830/1835, possibly in Scott County, Missouri.

Lucinda married ALFORD RUSH 16 Jan 1845 in Scott County, Missouri.
In the 1840 census, Nathan is shown to have had a daughter aged 5-10, putting her birth date between 1830 and 1835.  This is where I got this daughter's birth estimate.

I do not know whether Lucinda was a daughter of Nathan's, but she certainly could be, given that she lived in Scott County. This young woma married Alford Rush 16 Jan 1845 in Scott County, Missouri.

198 F iv. MARY? BREWER (NATHAN R, ISAAC, HOWELL JR, HOWELL SR, GEORGE)  was born in 1830/1835 in of Scott County, Missouri.
A third daughter was sometimes named for her mother.  Other times she might have been named for her mother's maternal grandmother. If she was named for her mother, then she would be called Mary or Mary Ann. This is strictly a guess, and should not be considered valid without further research.

The 1840 census shows that Nathan had another daughter aged 5-10 (born 1830-1835).  This is where I got her birth date and place estimates.
199. ISAAC BREWER (Union)(NATHAN R, ISAAC, HOWELL JR, HOWELL SR, GEORGE) was born about 1831 in (McMinn County?), Tennessee. He died after 1870 in of Deleware, Wyandotte, Kansas.

Isaac married TEMPERANCE CATHERINE MCCAGUE on 3 Jul 1851 in New Madrid, New Madrid County, Missouri. Temperance was born about 1833 in Alabama. She died after 1860 in Moreland Twp, Scott, Missouri (last known residence).

Naming customs of the time suggested first son be named for his father's father.  This helps prove that Nathan R Brewer's father was Isaac Brewer.

There was an Isaac Brewer serving in an Illinois regiment that could have been him.  Two of his brother served in the 18th Illinois Infantry, joining just across the river from Illinois, in Bird's Point, Missouri.

1870 Census - Wyandotte County, Kansas (very close to Douglas County, Kansas where Nancy Lucinda Brewer and Henry Lightle were married in 1865)
Perhaps both family moved there for the same reason during the violence of the Civil War. We know that Isaac served in the war, but maybe his father moved some of the family to Kansas soon after Isaac's enlistment and he went there after his discharge.  Hard to say.  Perhaps there is no such connection at all (I can't track his father after 1850, at which time he was still in Missouri).  It might be something that would be worth researching, and yet another link to suggest that Nathan Brewer (Isaac's father) is in fact a part of our same Brewer clan.
They had the following children.
277 M i. WILEY A BREWER was born about 1852. He died after 1870.
278 M ii. NATHAN BREWER was born about 1854. He died after 1870.
279 F iii. NANCY BREWER was born about 1856. She died after 1870.

Isaac also married MELVINA. She was born about 1842 in Missouri. She died after 1870 in Deleware, Wyandotte, Kansas (last known residence).

200 F vi. MISS BREWER (1840 census) was born in 1835/1840 in of Scott County, Missouri. She died before 1850 in Scott County, Missouri.

201. ELI BREWER (Union) (NATHAN R, ISAAC, HOWELL JR, HOWELL SR, GEORGE) was born in 1837/1838 in Moscow, Hickman, Kentucky. He died after 1861 in Commerce, Scott, Missouri (last known residence).

Eli married ELVIRA HAMILTON about 1858 in Missouri. Elvira was born in 1836/1838 in Missouri.

Note - In a diary of Reverend Sterling Gresham Jenskins, as transcribed in a book called "Antioch on McIntosh Trail", the reverend states that he married J Brewer to Miss Davison 23 Sep 1852. So maybe the marriage license was on the 20th and the marriage was on the 23rd.

They lived next door to the A Davison family who would be relations of his wife's, perhaps her brother and his family. There was a Lafeyette Davison who married a Susanna Brewer 10 Jan 1852 in Talladega County.  The marriage record is on ancestry.com.  This could be the same couple, although I'm not sure how Susanna fits into the Brewer family.  She might have been a sister of James Jasper Brewer that I didn't know about.  Or maybe she is the same person as his sister Susan, who I'd thought had died as an infant.

"Hilliard's Legion... organized at Montgomery, in June 1862, it was composed of five battalions (one cavalry and four infantry) and one battery of artillery. The identity of the battery is not yet known, but logically was one of those formed in Montgomery. In late 1862, the cavalry battalion, commanded by Colonel M. M. Slaughter of Talladega County, was consolidated with Goode's Georgia Cavalry Battalion, to become the 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment. In November 1863, the four infantry battalions were reassigned, and used to form the 59th and 60th Alabama Infantry Regiments, and the 23rd Alabama Infantry Battalion. At this time, Hilliard's Legion faded out of existence."

Pinckney's father's murder -
John Obediah Lowe was supposedly killed in a land dispute in South Carolina in about 1839 when Pinckney was about 3 years old.

Pinckney's father's extra wife -
A few years later his mother remarried, to Aziel Norris and they all moved to Alabama.  After having several children with him, Pinckney's mother learned that Aziel had been keeping another wife across the river from where they lived.  She turned him in to the authorities, who forced him to enlist (this was during the Civil War).  He fought for the Confederacy, but a few months later he got a hernia and ended up in a couple of Confederate hospitals in Richmond, Virginia and in the latter one he died.

Pinckney's military service -
Pinckney also fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War, but deserted.  It was likely during the time after he ran off, that he married Rosanna.  He was captured by the Union side in St. Clair County, Alabama in 1864 and taken to Tennessee and then to Louisville, Kentucky.  In both places he had to swear an oath of allegiance to the Union.  From Kentucky, he was then released on the condition that he agreed to remain north of the Ohio River until the war was over, which it seems that he did.  He only lived about 10 years more, before being murdered in Mississippi.

Pinkney's murder -
"Pinkney Lowe was shot and killed for telling a joke about a man at a "Log Rollin' get together". The man threatened to kill the men for telling the joke but Pinkney didn't seem worried about it. The next _morning Pinkney fixed a turn of corn and went to the mill. On his way home he was confronted by the man who had threatened him and was shot and killed. A posse was formed and they chased the killer down and killed him as he attempted to swim the Tombigbee River to freedom. This information was obtained from a letter written by Marvin Jackson and later given to Anita Falkner."

Since he died before receiving his full pay, his father asked for what was due him (Columbus had no wife or children to claim the money).  The amount due was $11.00 for one month of wages and $28.49 for 77 days of clothing allowance at 37 cents per day, amounting in total to $39.49.
