Hulda Angeline Brewer was born 6 Sep 1851 in Wakefield, Shelby County, Illinois to John Wesley Brewer and Mary America Hunter. She married Eli Freeman, a Confederate veteran, 23 Dec 1875 in Boone County, Arkansas at the age of 24. By 1882 they had been farming in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas for quite a while. Quite a few people moved to Texas after the Civil War in an attempt to get a new start.

Dear mother & brother & sister, It is with pleasur I seat my self to write you a few lines to let you know we ar all well & we hope these few lines may find you all enjoying the same great blessing. I thought I write to you once more to see if I could hear from you. It has bin something near four months since we have heard from you. We wrote to you about three months ago & we never got eny ansar. The time seems long to us & if you knew how glad we would be to hear from you, you surly would write oftener. Steward's [Nathaniel Stewart Collins, her sister Elizabeth's husband?] & John Wesley’s folks [Jesse Lee Collins and Polly Ann "Mary" Howard?] was well about three weeks ago. Times is hard here corn is one dollar to one dollar & 2 cents per bushel. Flour is four dollars a hundred. Pork is 8 cents a pound. We want to you write how time is there & write how you ar all a getting along. We want to know what a good claim could be bought at for this is a poor place for a poor man for the French is coming in by thousands. If we have good luck we ar going to leave here as soon as crop is gathered if they are any thing raised this year. Liza & Nora & John William say they ar going to Arkansas to see daddy & if daddy lives & we do we will see her next fall. If good luck & nothing happen to us all we think we will come without fail so we have nothing more to write at present. We want you all to write soon for we ar anxious to hear from you all. Write soon pleas.
